2008 AAV ANNUAL CONFERENCE and EXPO THREE SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE The Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV) is pleased to announce the availability of three scholarships to assist veterinarians with financial need*, who have not previously attended an AAV conference**, from countries outside the United States of America and Canada. Applicants must be veterinarians who are actively involved in avian medicine or aviculture and have demonstrated an interest in conservation. The conference consists of general lectures and practical laboratory sessions and will be held August 10-14, 2008, in Savannah, Georgia, USA. Please note that all lectures are in English. The first place scholarship winner will receive registration to all conference lecture sessions, up to four practical labs (as available on arrival at conference), and social functions.
In addition, the first place scholarship award includes up to $2000 US for economy travel, meals, up to seven nights lodging. Registration to the conference is valued at approximately $800 US; this is not included in the $2,000. The total of this award is approximately $2,800 US. The first place scholarship recipient will stay at the headquarters hotel. The hotel bill shall be paid for directly by the AAV Central Office, and the amount deducted from the $2,000 scholarship account. The AAV Central Office will pay (with credit card) for economy airline tickets upon the applicant's acceptance of the award, and the amount deducted from the $2,000 scholarship account. The applicant shall pay for meals not provided during conference week and submit them to the AAV Central Office for reimbursement. Funds not used from the $2,000 account shall remain the property of the AAV. Second and third place scholarship winners will receive registration to all conference lecture sessions, up to four practical labs (as available on arrival at conference), and social functions. It is valued at approximately $800.00US. The recipient is responsible for their personal travel and lodging arrangements and expenses. The Association Conference Office will try to assist in locating a roommate to minimize hotel expenses. A shared room will cost approximately $80.00 US per night per person. Applications must be received no later than May 9, 2008. Recipients will be notified via email by June 13, 2008. Applicants must supply the following information in English. - Name, address, email
- Veterinary college and year of graduation
- Nature of professional activity 4. Organization membership (professional, scientific, conservation)
- Biography (brief sketch of professional background) and a statement describing how attending the AAV conference will be of benefit to the avian population with which the applicant works
- Two supporting letters of recommendation from local conservation organizations or current Active members of the AAV Applicants (first, second, third place) are ranked based on the factors of: Cover letter, application, resume, recommendation letters, outreach potential, grasp of English, practice experience, avian/conservation medicine experience, and avian/Conservation practice experience.
Within two weeks from the time the successful applicant sends the AAV written acceptance of the scholarship, they shall provide the AAV with a copy of their airline ticket. If the scholarship recipient (a) accepts the award in writing and (b) fails to forward proof of their travel arrangements, the AAV shall designate an alternate individual to receive the award. This is, unfortunately, necessary due to past conference scholarship winners failing to attend to receive their award and keeping others from Recipients are expected to make a short presentation of avian medicine, aviculture, and conservation in their native countries, not at the conference. Recipients are required to identify themselves to the Executive Director, Mrs. Adina Rae Freedman, upon arrival at the conference and also attend the AAV membership meeting at (mid-day) 12:15p.m. Monday, August 11, 2008.
