The City and County of Denver’s Animal Care & Control Division has a vacancy for a Veterinarian (1/2 time). Provides professional medical veterinary services within the City and County of Denver’s Animal Care & Control Division. The principal function of this position is to ensure the humane treatment of animals while promoting public safety and public health regarding animal-related issues. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the Animal Care & Public Health Manager but extensive leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative.
Job Responsibilities: • Routinely examines or causes to be examined all animals brought into the Denver Municipal Animal Shelter to check for disease, injuries or related conditions which may prove painful or unsafe for the animal, or presents a health or safety risk to animal care personnel or the public; provides medical treatment and vaccination as necessary.
• Oversees and maintains appropriate medical histories for each animal while in the care of the Denver Municipal Animal Shelter.
• Oversees and vaccinates animals at Denver Animal Care & Control’s weekly vaccination clinics, and occasional vaccination clinics held in Denver Parks.
• Performs spay, neuter, and other minor surgeries (such as dewclaw removal, deciduous tooth removal, entropion correction and small mass removal) for adoptable animals, as applicable and possible.
• Euthanizes or designates for euthanasia animals deemed unadoptable or severely sick or injured.
• Develops policies, procedures, and protocols used in the care, security, diagnosis, treatment and euthanasia of animals at the Shelter.
• Trains and coordinates staff in appropriate animal care, including nutrition, medication, vaccination, welfare, environmental enrichment, and euthanasia, including demonstrations to new employees and reviews for existing employees.
• Responsible for euthanasia certification of all staff members involved in doing euthanasia.
• Assists in setting guidelines for adoption procedures.
• Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, palpate, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision (including microscopy), distance vision and peripheral vision.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions, and is exposed to potentially volatile situations which can present risk of violence or injury. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud
Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited College or University with a Doctoral Degree in Veterinary Medicine. Two years of professional experience providing medical care and treatment to a variety of exotic or domestic animals.
Must be primarily proficient in canine and feline veterinary medicine, but also capable in evaluating basic health status of livestock including but not limited to horses, goats, fowl, and cattle; small domestic mammals including but not limited to rabbits, guinea pigs, rodents, and ferrets; wildlife including but not limited to rabbits, squirrels, geese, raptors, pigeons, caiman, and raccoons; and other animals including but not limited to fish, tarantulas, scorpions, snakes, turtles, and iguanas.
Valid Colorado Veterinary License.
